Later in the course, we were assigned to make a chair. I chose the Architect and Designer, Eero Saarinen, who created the Womb Chair. Some backstory is that the chair went through several iterations before it became what we see it as today. The idea of mixing its original prototype legs with its newer style while still paying tribute to its original form is how this little blue chair was born. “RAW BLUE” was created with oven clay. The color palette was specifically chosen with a muted gray background, which was intended to make the blue even more eye-catching. Then, the next thought was, what is a model without showing scale or in this case, a chair without a person? The idea came to add a mannequin as an artistic muse.
This course was to guide us through the different eras of design while exploring many of its historic buildings and furniture along the way.
MODERN FURNITURE CLASS
A fun part of this design was being able to create by hand, and it unlocked a creative spark, the one where you just do and not care about the outcome.
